Volunteer

We couldn’t do all that we do without the generosity and commitment of our volunteers. We have various volunteer positions available whether you have a little time or a lot, to give. Volunteering is a great way to gain experience, meet new people, and give back to community. Thank you for thinking of us. Listed below are the roles and responsibilities of available volunteer positions at SFRC.

​Clothing Café:
The Clothing Café is a free resource for parents to access clothing for their children in sizes 0-6, and some maternity clothing. We occasionally have books, toys, shoes, accessories, carriers, nursing pillows, strollers and other necessities for new moms. Volunteers are essential to the management of incoming donations. Clothing café volunteers sort donated clothing to keep high quality items in like new condition. Due to the incoming quantity of donations, we prioritize to display and offer only items that meet a high standard, and items in high demand. Volunteers are asked for a 2-hour commitment each week, for a period of 3 months.

Hourly Commitment per week: 2
Minimum commitment: 3 months​

Food Prep:
SFRC believes health is critical to all aspects of a person’s life. Each of our programs offers a healthy snack to families, along with a recipe to encourage the adoption of affordable nutritious meal planning for families in our community. Food prep volunteers assist with snack preparation for daily programs, as well as advance preparation of frozen options, and baked goods. Volunteers are required to have their Food Handler’s certificate and are asked for a 2 to 3 hour commitment each week, for a period of 3 months. Long term committed volunteers may receive Food Handler’s Certificate at no cost.

Requirements: Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry, Food Handler’s Certificate.
Hourly Commitment per week: 2-3
Minimum Commitment: 3 months​

Childcare:
Parenting programs at SFRC engage the child and caregiver in activities that promote education, development and attachment. Siblings outside of the program’s age group are cared for in the playroom adjacent to where the program is taking place. SFRC’s regular and specialty programs require childcare volunteers to assist our child minder in supervising and engaging with children during these programs. Volunteers are required to have their criminal record and child abuse registry checks, and are asked for a 3-month commitment to one regular or specialty program on the calendar.

Requirements: Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry.
Hourly Commitment per week: 2hrs per week, or per program.
Minimum Commitment: 3 months​

Program Assistant:
SFRC offers free group programs for expecting parents, new parents, and families of all types and sizes with children age 0-5yrs. Our Family Educators and Outreach staff appreciate the assistance of volunteers in setting up, cleaning up, encouraging, supervising and general assistance in activities and games. Program Assistant volunteers may do some basic food preparation, and should be physically able to lift and move tables, chairs, and other program equipment both indoors and outdoors. Volunteers are required to have their criminal record and child abuse registry checks, and are asked for a 3-month commitment to one regular or one specialty program on the calendar.​

Requirements: Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry.
Hourly Commitment per week: 4hrs per week, or per program.
Minimum Commitment: 3 months​

Photography/Videography/Graphic Design:
Marketing materials and promotional images are key to bringing awareness to the public and keeping families informed of the programs and resources offered at SFRC. We invite photographers, videographers, and graphic designers of all experience levels willing to share their talent with us to volunteer throughout the year at special events, during regular and specialty programs, and for specific marketing projects. Volunteers working in the Centre are required to have a good understanding of the requirements for media consent surrounding youth and vulnerable people, and have their criminal record and child abuse registry checks.​

Requirements: Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry.
Hourly Commitment per week: Varied and flexible.
Minimum Commitment: On a project basis, ongoing, and as needed.​

Shopping:
Supplies, food, and materials for our programs are regularly purchased on a weekly basis. The shopping volunteer is a long-time, committed volunteer with proven trustworthiness and reliability. The shopping volunteer is able to organize purchases by program, make in the moment budgeting decisions, manage multiple receipts and obtain the best quality items and food products for the Centre while following direction. Training is provided.​

Requirements: Transportation required.
Hourly Commitment per week: 3hrs per week.
Minimum Commitment: 1 year​

Special Events:
SFRC is involved in a number of special events every year to bring awareness to the community of the resources we offer. Some examples include local festivals, fairs, and parades. We also host many events at the Centre for families, volunteers, and the public. Much of our operating costs are brought in through additional fundraising events and campaigns. Special event volunteers are needed for a variety of events throughout the year to represent the Centre and share information on our programs, as well as for setting up locations, cleaning, decorating, promoting and more. Special event volunteers working in the Centre are required to have their criminal record and child abuse registry checks.​

Hourly Commitment per week: Varied and flexible.
Minimum Commitment: On an event basis, ongoing, and as needed.​

Reception:
At SFRC, we pride ourselves on our inclusive, friendly and welcoming Centre. Reception volunteers are knowledgeable about community resources, Centre programs, and are the first face or voice in responding to the public, acknowledging donations, and welcoming families to the Centre. Reception volunteers require a working knowledge of telephone and computer systems, and must be competent in English language. German and French speaking volunteers are also welcome.

Requirements: Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry.
Hourly Commitment per week: 1 to 4x/month, 3 to 4 hour shifts.
Minimum Commitment: 3 months​

Administration:
Often SFRC has additional administrative projects for fundraising initiatives, special events, and programs. Many of these projects require little to no administrative experience and involve labelling, stuffing envelopes, applying stickers, or other various tasks. Additionally, volunteers with specialized computer or technical skills, website design, accounting, organizational administration, audio-visual presentations and social media (to name a few) are welcome to inquire about SFRC administration project needs.​

Minimum Commitment: On a project basis, ongoing, and as needed.​

Board Member/Committee Member:
Run by a volunteer Board of Directors, SFRC recruits passionate community members dedicated to our mission of serving families in the community. Community members with experience and background in specialty fields are encouraged to express interest in learning about Board Member and Committee opportunities. (Human Resources, Medical, Legal, Science, Financial, etc) Committees include: Recruitment, Personnel, Financial, Public Relations, Fundraising and others as dictated by the needs of the organization.  Board Members are expected to commit to a multi-year term, and to serve on a minimum of one committee.​

Hourly Commitment per week: Varied.
Minimum Commitment: Terms are set each year at the Annual General Meeting. Minimum one-year term, no maximum term set.​

Yard Care:
Steinbach Family Resource Centre’s Outdoor Play Park, raised gardens, and landscaping are an ongoing seasonal opportunity for volunteers to support the Centre. Volunteers enjoy weed-pulling, sweeping, grass cleanup/lawn care, and preparing the park for the season You will have large time blocks available within a seasonal period to volunteer in the spring or the fall.

Requirements: Physically able to perform tasks such as bending, pulling, raking, and yard care.
Hourly Commitment per week: 15 hours within a one-month period. April/May, and October/November
Minimum Commitment: 1 season, spring or fall.​

Maintenance:
Odd jobs abound at SFRC! Volunteers with trade skills in technical, mechanical and construction are invited to support the Centre by offering their time and trade in minor repair, building projects, painting, and more! Examples include building furniture, shelving, minor desk repair, building maintenance, and construction, and custom projects. Cleaning projects are also an opportunity to assist with general maintenance and can be done flexibly. Cleaning includes seasonal, weekly and monthly tasks.​

Requirements: Physically able to perform tasks such as bending, wiping, lifting.
Hourly Commitment per week: 15 hours within a one-month period. April/May, and October/November
Minimum Commitment: 1 season, spring or fall.

In addition to our regular volunteer needs, you can also volunteer on your own time with your talents for making handmade baby items, blankets, and home-made goods. You can also host a private fundraiser, or raise awareness for supporting families with your special event.
